16) France:

France has had its fair share of corruption scandals, most recently the Cahuzac scandal involving the Minister of Finance, Jérôme Cahuzac.

In this case, Cahuzac was found to have secretly transferred millions of dollars to and from offshore accounts in order to avoid paying taxes. This scandal led to the dismissal of Cahuzac, as well a nationwide regularization of foreign accounts held by French citizens.

At a larger level, government corruption in France is believed to be largely due to the large bureaucracy and complexity of the national government. This has led to cases of waste and mismanagement of public funds, as well as favouritism in government contracts.

Furthermore, cronyism is rampant, with well-connected individuals being able to secure positions and advantages that they would otherwise not receive. The effects of these practices are visible in the high unemployment rate and rising inequality in the country, as public funds are diverted to the wealthy and well-connected elite, depriving the average citizen of much needed resources.
