3 Workplace Scenarios for Role Play
Scenario: Conducting a Performance Review
In this scenario, one employee will play the role of a manager conducting a performance review with an employee. The other employee will play the role of the employee receiving the review. The goal is to provide constructive feedback that helps the employee improve their performance and achieve their goals.
Here’s an outline of the scenario:
Manager: “Thank you for meeting with me today. I wanted to review your performance over the past year and provide you with some feedback on how you’re doing.”
Employee: “Sure, thank you for taking the time to meet with me.”
Manager: “Overall, I think you’ve done a good job in meeting your targets and contributing to the team’s success. However, I have a few areas where I think you could improve.”
Employee: “Okay, I’m open to hearing your feedback.”
Manager: “One thing I noticed is that you tend to struggle with time management. You sometimes miss deadlines or take longer than expected to complete tasks, which can hold up the rest of the team. How can we work together to improve your time management skills?”
Employee: “I could try using a planner or time management app to keep track of my tasks and deadlines. I could also work on prioritizing my work more effectively.”
Manager: “That’s a good start. Another area where I think you could improve is your communication skills. Sometimes, you don’t provide enough detail in your reports, or you don’t communicate changes in a project clearly to the rest of the team. How can we work on improving your communication?”
Employee: “I could try to be more specific and detailed in my reports and project updates. I could also make sure to communicate changes to the team in a clear and timely manner.”
Manager: “That’s great to hear. I’m glad you’re willing to work on these areas. Let’s set some goals for the next quarter that will help you improve your time management and communication skills. We’ll check in again in a few months to see how you’re doing.”
Employee: “Sounds good. Thank you for your feedback and for working with me to help me improve.”
This scenario allows employees to practice their feedback and coaching skills, as well as their ability to identify areas for improvement and set goals for improvement. The key to success is to provide constructive feedback that is specific, actionable, and focused on helping the employee succeed.
